TREND PET
design studio for cats and dogs
Ever tried to get a cat into a travel basket?
This is not something that cats or their owners enjoy, usually it means drama! Studio Snorhaar created a carrier that appeals to both. The result: a travel cat bag that gives every cat a trustable feeling.
By creating a travel bag with many peepholes, the cat retains control of it’s surroundings in a subtle way without being
visible. It is recommended to have the cat get used to the travel bag from an early age. This is possible because the travel bag can be transformed into a sleeping basket, this way the cat
immediately gets a bond with the bag. It becomes a trustable place for the cat and this makes him feel calm. Furthermore, the cat’s smell will stay in the bag which is essential for familiar feelings with his surroundings.
As Regina Mol from Studio Snorhaar explains it:
« For my research to find the perfect travel bag for the cat I was inspired by the Dutch ethologist and Nobel prize winner Niko van Tinbergen (1907-1988). He studied communication behavior among animals by going into the open field, watch closely, and asking the right questions before interpreting. Van Tinbergen called this watching, waiting & wondering.
In my « cats laboratory » I’ve done research to the response of cats at various traveling bags, materials and structures. By observing a cat you’ll already get to know a lot about his or her personality. Does the cat sleep in a circle? Does the cat always search for a quiet place? Does the cat want a good view? Where does the cat usually lie on? On the basis of tests with different cats to their favorite spots and positions I observed a number of similarities. Cats have their own will, they do things the way they want it. They are very curious and love little holes to hide in, but at the same time they want to keep a clear overview of their surroundings. This gives them a familiar feeling. Also, cats like natural materials which are uneven. By using soft fabrics you create safety and security for the cat. These research data are incorporated into the design. »
Everything is now ready for your next travel trip. Enjoy!

caring moment
Beaumont en Auge is a small place, reminiscent of an invincible village, located in the Calvados region near Deauville - France. It harbors, nestled in the hills, a new clinical concept: Dogs Cats &Co.
A young generation is initiating a new philosophy and a dynamic economy, seeking truth and quality of life. As a result, they are correcting and transforming the extent and nature of nearby shops and services.
Stemming from this movement, young veterinary doctor Alexandra Mahé is proceeding in the opposite direction of large, veterinary structures, providing a medical response and new care methods that are as concrete as they are sensitive. She places both animal and man together within her living area and at the heart of her attention.
It is a courageous blend of private life and professional passion… a combination of feeling and medical responsibility, sustained by the comfort of being as near as possible to the animals in her care.
It constitutes the reinvention of veterinary practice.
In a very handsome home dating from the 50’s and located in the heart of the village, two floors dedicated to medical practice are decorated with infinite feeling, providing a context as calming for the animal as for its owner.
As soon as one crosses the threshold, the charm of the residence, like a veritable Guest House, and of its hosts, takes effect.
Here, the waiting room opens onto a magnificent garden where a pervading scent of « everything will be alright » conveys an immense sense of relief for both animal and master. The atmosphere is comforting with expressive, lively colors and a playful mood that incites one to take a book and serve oneself to coffee, just like at home, before sitting down next to the chimney
There, in the gentle and diligent consultation area, the auscultation table is highlighted, opposite a window like an open mind…so begins the real change for the animal, surprised to be hoisted onto a pedestal with a view: a moment of bliss for all concerned, since the senses are touched and relaxed by this peaceful horizon!
Then, to design another aspect of our young vet, it is worthwhile to stress the fact that the principle of gentleness applies as well to the rates she charges for her attentive consultations, a coherent part of her desire to accompany the animal in a close, more personal way.
What flair! Never before has a veterinary clinic been so attractive and welcoming.
Finally a feeling of hope exists for a more compassionate, animal medical world, where going to the vet becomes a pleasant walk, and no longer a burden, for both Animal and Man.

Dogs are frequently called a human's best friend. They have been with us for centuries and give us company and unconditional love. Often considered as part of the family, they mainly live in a manmade and specifically adapted space. Thus we often build objects that will satisfy our needs and longings and not theirs. For this reason, Japanese curator and architect Kenya Hara decided to gather a group of architects and designers to join forces in a project called Architecture for Dogs.
Through the conception of 13 projects, the architects aimed to give different breeds of dogs adapted shelter solutions and to put humans more in contact with nature and their animal friends. The different spaces and objects vary from classical shelter solutions, to more intricate wearable habitats. All of these projects come hand in hand with “DIY”(Do it Yourself) tutorial videos and with a free downloadable manual. People can therefore, for the love of their companions and without a big investment, start a personal project aiming to protect and attend to their dog’s needs.
In order to respond to the different breeds requirements, Hara provided the group with a guide on the specificities of each one of them and then established an ongoing conversation to arrive to a viable concept. The dogs of course, tested the structures, and in some cases they refused to embrace them and the design had to be changed.
Pritzker Prize wining Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima designed a shelter for the bichon frise taking into account the “fluffiness” of the animal’s fur. By creating a cocoon like structure and adding a small entrance adapted to the dog’s size, the animal feels protected and comfortable. Another interesting project was the one made by architect Toyo Ito for shiba dogs. The cute basket like design is aimed to serve different purposes for the dog. When at home it can be used as a comfortable bed. When going for walks, if the dog feels tired, he is old or even if “the asphalt is hot” the dog can gracefully sit inside his “carriage” and enjoy this bonding time with his owner.

blue
It is our pets who we observe and see our primal behaviors and needs. The fearless hunt for play, rest and food. Their make do attitude and attention to the clock of nature rather than the tick of time reminds us to be more in tune with all of the elements surrounding ourselves. Also to make ourselves cozy and comfortable. I enjoy watching my kitten, Blue fashion a bed out of my shirt i have left on the floor. She carefully arranges it into a beautiful nest and curls up for a nap. When she is playing, her fierce determination and nimble moves are quite impressive.
She swats, leaps, and balances across the most unbelievable obstacle courses that she creates with the landscape of architecture, furniture, and objects throughout my apartment. And when she breaks or scratches something i never get upset. It is her world inside here too. To exist among the spirit of another animal is the ultimate intimacy. She is always smelling the roses while never missing the most subtle details.
